Many people think that President Biden, who is 78, is too old to serve as President. Still, there are many arguments as to why age shouldn’t matter when you are fit to serve. There are many reasons why being old is an advantage in politics. 

One advantage of being 78 years old is that you have much more life experience than younger people. President Biden was a Delaware senator for 36 years which shows he is knowledgeable. He was clearly popular among his constituents because he was reelected as the senator of Delaware six times. Biden has also had 80 million people vote for him as president. He also served as Vice President under former President Obama. This experience in the White House indicates that he knows what it takes to be the President. A president needs to lead without bias, working in the interest of the entire country. A good president also needs to be diplomatic by maintaining good relations with other countries and being a strong public figure. In his inaugural address, Biden showed that he understands the importance of diplomacy, saying “America has been tested and we’ve come out stronger for it. We will repair our alliances and engage with the world once again, not to meet yesterday’s challenges but today’s and tomorrow’s challenges. And we’ll lead not merely by the example of our power, but by the power of our example. We’ll be a strong and trusted partner for peace, progress, and security.” 

During the election, some liberal voters were afraid that due to Biden’s old age, he would take more conservative stances. However, this is not the case as evidenced by many of the President’s policies. He plans to ban the manufacture and sale of high-capacity magazines and assault weapons for public use, which is a monumental decision. President Biden also plans to fight racial inequality. President Biden also plans to advance LGBTQ+ rights in the US. He has already started doing this by reversing the ban that prohibited transgender people from serving in the military. The reversal of the transgender ban  is very important because not only will it let many more people in the US serve their country, it will also make an estimated 15,000 transgender servicepeople feel recognized and supported.

According to The Hill, 71 percent of Republicans do not believe that Biden is mentally fit to serve as President. Former President Donald Trump has repeatedly questioned Biden’s mental fitness, saying that “Biden can’t put two sentences together,” and that “he’s incompetent.”  Yet despite his old age, President Biden proved his mental fitness when he released a three-page medical summary written about him by Dr. Kevin O’Connor. In the summary, Biden is described as a “healthy, vigorous, 77-year-old male, who is fit to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency to include those as Chief Executive, Head of State and Commander in Chief.” Additionally, Biden is not much older than former President Trump, who is 74. This means Trump’s attacks on Biden may apply to himself a well.

Not only is Biden mentally fit to serve as President but he is also physically fit. According to Dr. Kevin O’Connor, President Biden does not smoke tobacco or drink alcohol. The President works out at least five days a week. All of these things show that Biden is very healthy and is determined to maintain his health. 

Biden is a prime example of how old age doesn’t preclude you from the presidency. In many ways, President Biden’s age is an asset. It gives him more experience in government, more motivation to maintain his health, and it does not limit his thinking.
